NOTE that this series is held on FIRST Wednesdays each month.

The WCW Poetry Cooperative of Southern Bergen County is pleased to invite the international poets Jee Leong Koh and Ocean Vuong as the feature on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 7:00 p. m. As usual this monthly program will also feature the words of William Carlos Williams, this time in a presentation by me, John J. Trause, on Herbert Leibowitz's biography of WCW, Something Urgent I Have to Say to Yo , which was published recently by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. We conclude with open readings from the floor. No advanced registration is required and all poets and poetry lovers are invited. We hold the WCW Poetry Cooperative readings in the upstairs Terrace of Williams Center for the Arts (www.williamscenter.org) located at 1 Williams Plaza in Rutherford, N. J.

The Fox Chase Reading Series kicks off the 2012 season on January 29^th at 2pm with featured poets Mike Cohen and Anthony Buccino. The reading will be held at Ryerss Museum and Library, 7370 Central Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. 19111. The featured poets will be followed by an open mic.

Mike Cohen has authored two collections of poetry, Poet’s Pilgrimage and For Reading Out Loud, both awaiting discovery and broad dissemination (perhaps posthumously). Mike’s work has appeared in the Schuylkill Valley Journal, Philadelphia Daily News, Mad Poets Review, and Poetry Forum Anthology. He has presented public readings in various bookstores, coffee shops, and libraries. Mike’s current project is Poetry Aloud And Alive program at the Big Blue Marble Book Store in West Mt. Maude Carolan Pych

A former newspaper reporter, Maude now creates Christian inspirational poetry and poems to record family history. A born again believer, she has been seriously engaged in writing as a ministry for twenty-five years. The poet is a three-time finalist and twice the recipient of Editor’s Choice Awards in the national Allen Ginsberg contest. Twice she won awards for poetry at the annual St. Catherine of Bologna Patron of the Arts Photo, Art & Poetry Exhibition in Ringwood, NJ. Her poems have appeared in The Paterson Literary Review, Sensations Magazine, Lips, The Pillar Monthly, and William W. Francis’ book, Celebrate the Feasts of the Lord.

The poet is a member of the North Jersey Christian Writer’s Group, leads the Paper Pen & Praise ministry at her congregation, and for fifteen years has been publishing a quarterly poetry missive for email subscribers, entitled, It’s All About…The Lamb. Her newest chapbooks are From My Heart to Yours at Christmas—Cookies & Poems and The Widow’s Song. They are available for purchase at her website. She is currently writing poems for a chapbook about her pilgrimages to Israel.

A mother and grandmother, Maude is married to Robert F. Pych. They attend Beth Israel Worship Center in Wayne and reside in Totowa, New Jersey.

LAURA FREEDGOOD’S second book of poems, Slant of the Heart (Pudding House Press) was released in the fall of 2010. Her first collection, Weather Report, was published by Pudding House Press in 2007. Her poems appear in Descant, Hawai’i Pacific Review, Euphony, Wisconsin Review, Journal of New Jersey Poets, Heliotrope, The Chrysalis Reader, Meadowlands Review, and other print and online journals. Nominated for The Pushcart Prize, she was also awarded a three-year poetry grant from the City University of New York, where she worked as an Assistant Professor from 2003 to 2010. She has recently completed a new manuscript of poems entitled What I Would Paint if I Could. Currently retired and living in Montclair, New Jersey, she is able to devote more time to her two passions: poetry and dance.

This is a reading course in contemporary poetry designed to cultivate a deep
engagement with the poems we will read. Most of the works will have been
composed by living poets, but students will also look at a number of earlier
poems, as these will help readers to understand the tradition within which

ArtsPRunlimited, Inc., announces a special program focused on the Sacco and Vanzetti case of 1920 - 1927 and a look at labor history and the ongoing issues of discrimination and justic in the USA. This program will feature video excerpts from the Off-Broadway production, "Sacco and Vanzetti" which was produced and directed by Daniel P. Quinn, a New Jersey based writer and poet.

Photographs from the production as they appear in Mr. Quinn's book, "Exits and Entrances" will be shown as well as archival press material. Italian American actress and writer, Christina Conforti will make a guest appearance and read excerpts from Mr. Quinn's book, "Organized Labor" which includes a narrative poem on Sacco and Vanzetti, the 1913 strike in Paterson, New Jersey and Italian American immigration.

In addition, Mr. Quinn will give insight into his experience producing and directing his production of "Sacco and Vanzetti" which lasted for twelve years and was presented at five different locations. This diverse program will also feature music pertaining to the period.

Atlantic City-born and raised Poet Nancy Mercado: Featured in The Encyclopedia of Hispanic American Literature (Facts on File) and inducted into The Museum of American Poetics, Nancy is also profiled in Latino Leaders Magazine as "one of the most celebrated members of the Puerto Rican literary movement in the Big Apple". The NJ-born and raised Dirty Poet: The Dirty Poet has worked in a trauma unit for some decades, and the narrative poems of EMERGENCY ROOM WRESTLING, full of bite and gallows humor, read like vaudeville monologues from a combat zone.

Hoboken Poet Danny Shot: The founding editor in chief of influential Hoboken literary journal, Long Shot, Danny has read his poetry on many stages and published in such journals as Big Bridge and Evergreen Review and the anthology, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry.

“Celebrating Love Poetry” to read at College of St. Elizabeth Feb. 8

Morristown, New Jersey – First place was awarded to Kathleen Kirk, poetry editor of Escape Into Life, who resides in Normal, IL, second place was awarded to Judith Dowd, a member of Cool Women, a performance ensemble based in New Jersey, third place was awarded to Michelle Bonczek, teacher of creative writing and literature in Pennsylvania.

Fifty poems were selected to be included in the anthology. Finalists included Fawzia Afza-Kahn, Celia Lisset Alvarez, Elliott batTzedek, Carol Berg, Judy Blumenson, Joseph Cilluffo, Gail Braune Comorat, Ann Curran, Grace Curtis, Ariana D. Den Bleyker, Lois Parker Edstrom, Kathleen Fagley, Lois Marie Harrod, Anjie Kokan, Jacqueline Kolosov, Michelle Lerner, Antoinette (Toni) Libro, Shahé Mankerian, Lisa Mansell, Grace Marcus, John McDermott, Lynne McEnirey, Damon McLauglin, Susan Laughter Meyers, Michelle Ovalle, Susanna Rich, Edwin Romond, Leah Stenson, Christine Stewart-Nunez, Dave Worrell, and Lisa Wujnovic.

David Crews assisted in the judging of the contest. Crews was a finalist for both the 2011 Knightville Poetry Prize and the 2010 46er Prize for Poetry, as well as nominated for a 2011 Pushcart Prize. He received an MFA in Poetry from Drew University, serves as an associate editor for The Stillwater Review, and both teaches and lives in northwest New Jersey.

Christine Redman-Waldeyer founded the journal in 2011. She currently teaches creative writing, journalism, and literature at Passaic County Community College. She earned her doctorate with a Concentration in Writing from Drew University. Her publications include Frame by Frame, Gravel, and Eve Asks with Muse Pie Press. She recently was selected to participate in the Poetry Project founded by Dr. Mary Ann Miller at Caldwell College.

A reading of the anthology will take place on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at the College of St. Elizabeth at 7 pm. The reading is free and open to the public. The Montclair Public Library's monthly program "An Evening of Poetry" meets Thursday, January 5, at 7 pm in the Auditorium. Coordinated by award-winning poets Laura Boss and Maria Mazziotti Gillan, this month's feature poets are Robert Carnevale and Priscilla Orr. The event is free and an open reading follows the featured readers.

Robert Carnevale’s poems have appeared in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, The Alaska Quarterly and other magazines and anthologies. His co-translations (with Carol Ueland) of poems by Aleksandr Kushner have been published in The Kenyon Review, Agni, World Literature Today, and Poetry Daily. He is a member of the graduate faculty at Drew University.

Priscilla Orr, author of Jugglers and Tides, and the forthcoming Losing the Horizon from Hannacroix Creek Books, is a recipient of fellowships from New Jersey State Council on the Arts and Yaddo. She is a Dodge poet and has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is an Associate Professor of English, and lives with her spirited Norwich terrier, Crosby, in Hamburg, N.J.

He was the 2008 First Prize winner of the Allen Ginsberg Poetry contest, and he has received six Pushcart Prize nominations for Poetry.

William Paterson University's new online magazine Map Literary is pleased to announce a $250 prize for the most provocative and well-written essay (nonfiction or creative nonfiction) we receive through our Submishmash portal by midnight, January 15.

We welcome previously unpublished manuscripts between approximately 12–20 pages. There is no entry fee, and all nonfiction submissions will be considered for the prize as well as for publication in Map Literary.

Tara Betts is the author of the book Arc and Hue. Tara is a lecturer in creative writing at

Rutgers University and Cave Canem fellow. She is co-editing Bop, Strut, and Dance, a

collection of Bop poems, with Afaa M. Weaver. Her work appears in numerous anthologies

and journals, including Gathering Ground, Bum Rush the Page, and the upcoming

A Face to Meet the Faces and Villanelles. Tara appeared on HBO's "Def Poetry Jam."

She represented Chicago twice at the National Poetry Slam. Her work has been adapted

for Steppenwolf Theater's "Words on Fire," "Fingernails Across a Chalkboard" at the

National Black Theater, and several productions of "That Takes Ovaries!" In 2011,

she was commissioned by the Peggy Choy Dance Company to write a short libretto

inspired by the brief friendship of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali.

Steve Peacock featured in NYC literary podcast

POINT PLEASANT POET FEATURED IN NYC LITERARY PODCAST

(NEW YORK) A local writer's work has been selected to appear both in print and via the iTunes podcast of a New York City literary magazine. Steve Peacock, who lives in the Bay Head Shores section of Point Pleasant Boro, performed "Commuters," a narrative poem inspired by his former daily trek from Lakewood to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

"Commuters," though a fictional work, explores to the travails of a daily New Jersey commuter from the perspective of an exhausted man who works the midnight shift—a man who draws the line one day in response to the:

mistreatment

sustained at the hands

and heels

and hearts of his fellow interstate commuters

[which] makes for a spicy concoction

when brought to a boil.

Dustin Luke Nelson, co-editor of InDigest Magazine, invited Peacock to participate in the journal's "Poem of the Day" podcast. (http://indigestmag.com/blog/?p=9904). Nelson and Peacock crossed paths earlier this year after their respective poetic works were featured in an unrelated literary venture. Peacock's poetry appeared in the literary journal Monkeybicycle, as did Nelson's. Both poets participated in Monkeybicycle's "Lightning Round" event at the Cake Shop in New York.

"I'm delighted that Dustin remembered me from the Monkeybicycle event and enjoyed my work enough to actually invite me to submit something to his magazine," Peacock said. "It's rare thing for an aspiring writer to receive such an unsolicited invitation from a respected literary publication."

Peacock currently works as an English teacher at Manchester Township High School. Peacock, who previously worked in New York City as a hotel detective – or "hotel dick," as the job traditionally is known – likewise is the author of Hotel Dick, a memoir about his experiences at the Helmsley Palace, Manhattan's former playground of the rich and famous. He also currently writes for and edits the investigative news blog U.S. Trade & Aid Monitor (tradeaidmonitor.com).

Haiku has emerged as one of the most popular poetic forms of the 20th and 21st centuries. The form, with its brevity and pinpoint illumination of the spiritual, appeals to a contemporary audience that yearns for meaning in a chaotic and rushed world. In some ways, haiku dovetails with some aspects of Post-Modernism, in its capacity to reveal telling moments and express spiritual loneliness. Many poets including Alan Watts, Robert Hass and Jack Kerouac wrote haiku and were influenced by them. Haiku societies exist in almost every country, and there are many books, journals and websites devoted to the art of writing haiku. Some practitioners remain loyal to the traditional Japanese format of 17 syllables, but others, especially English-speaking poets have taken the form into new directions, adapting it to the English language and allowing the use of non-natural images common to modern life.

Graphic Novels, Comic Books & the Art of Visual Storytelling
with Mark McKenna

Mark McKenna, a long time comic book artist working for DC and Marvel Comics on more than 450 comic books and 7000 pages offers this session on the process of comic book creating. Learn what it takes to create a comic book from the idea phase to the lettering, panel arrangement, drawing and inking of the artwork.

Mark McKenna has worked on The X Men, Batman, Spider Man and the Hulk and is currently working on the Dark Horse Comic’s Star Wars: The Lost Suns mini-series. Mark has also created his own children’s book series, Banana Tail and Friends and will have books available to purchase.

$25/session if pre-registered, $35 at the door

Pat Valdata, who read in Bridgewater for the Somerset Poetry Group in August, will be one of the presenters at the Bay to Ocean Writer’s Conference on February 25.

The Kent Humanities Building, Chesapeake College

Rt. 50 & 213, near Easton, Maryland

This is a one-day conference. There's inexpensive lodging nearby, and it is close to the Queenstown shopping outlet and the towns of Easton and St. Michaels, in the event you might consider an overnight trip.

Poetry Workshop—Mondays, 7–-9:45 p.m.
Prerequisite: Creative Writing I or permission of the instructor.
The course provides instruction and practice in classical and contemporary
techniques and forms of poetry, with an emphasis on mastering the basic rhythms,
patterns and forms of poetry. (3 credits)

Contemporary Poetry—Mondays, 2-–4:45 p.m.
Prerequisite: Composition II, Introduction to Literature or permission of the
instructor.
This is a reading course in contemporary poetry designed to cultivate a deep
engagement with the poems we will read. Most of the works will have been
composed by living poets, but students will also look at a number of earlier
poems, as these will help readers to understand the tradition within which
today's poets are writing. (3 credits)

Classes begin Jan. 23 at the Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike, and are
open to current students and members of the community interested in learning
more about poetry. Registration begins Nov. 28.

Byro poem takes 1st Place in IPC

Paterson, New Jersey, poet Laurie Byro’s poem Eating Crow Speaks takes first place in the Winning Poems For November 2011 on the Interboard Poetry Community.

Byro, who attends the Distinguished Poets Workshops at the Poetry Center in Paterson, notes that she placed 36 times over the past 10 years.

Page Meets Stage is a monthly pairing of two poets, one who writes more traditional, page-oriented poetry, and another who might be better described as a spoken word artist or slam poet. Both poets are onstage for the entire reading and take turns at the microphone, sometimes commenting on each other’s poems, and sometimes going off in a new direction. It is not a competition in any way. It’s an ongoing conversation.
