Jackson Heights Poetry Festival's 2012-2013 Season

Dear Friend,

I am very excited to announce that I have taken over Jackson Heights Poetry Festival (JHPF), a literary organization based right here in my own backyard. For now, I will be focusing on JHPF's monthly reading series, First Tuesdays, which takes place on the first Tuesday of the month, September through June. Details are at the end of the email.

First Tuesdays happens at Terraza 7, a very cool cafe on Gleane Street in Jackson Heights, just a couple of blocks from the 82nd Street stop on the 7 train. There are a lot of wonderful restaurants with food from all over the world in walking distance of the cafe. You can try Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Filipino. Columbian, Ecuadorian, Mexican, Afghani, Japanese, Italian and more. In fact, there are enough different kinds of cuisines in this neighborhood that you could come for the reading once a month for ten months and never eat food from the same country twice.

First Tuesdays is a neighborhood reading series in the best sense of that word. There's no "scene," no pretense. People come to share their work during the open mic, to hear what others are writing and to enjoy the featured reader's performance. I don't think I've ever been to a reading where someone has not gotten on stage to read their work for the first time and I am humbled each time someone gets up to read just to celebrate the work of others. One woman, for example, has made it a practice to keep her mother's memory alive by coming to read poems that she wrote but did not publish throughout her life.

I hope you'll consider coming down to share your work and be part of our community, and if you're interested in being a featured reader, send me an email at rjn@richardjnewman.com. Just make sure the words "Featured Reader Inquiry" are in the subject line. The 2012-2013 season is already booked and I have had such a wonderful response that the first half of 2013-2014 is booked as well. Still, if you can plan that far ahead, please do send me an email. JHPF's mission is to feature writers from Queens, but I look forward to featuring writers from elsewhere as well.
