Split Geometry
On Asbury's beach
it's too late for a swim,
but not for pipers running
a wave's hypotenuse,
or a Monarch
at the high tide line,
the top of one bright wing
sheared off,
lost to the migrating wind.
                      A quarter mile south
                      is the missing piece--
                      orange and black, scalene,
the parts summed up in my palm
                      as a seagull describes
                      a circle backwards,
                      bisects it,
                      some dead thing
                      along the diameter.
By the rocks, half a lime
with desiccating radii
and another half of a Monarch wing,
the parts now more than their sum,
what we've long half-suspected,
But couldn't that be what hope is:
somewhere down the autumn beach
not the other but another half,
waiting in the wings?
(from What Remains by Juditha Dowd)
