National Poetry Month in Cranford - April 8

Celebrate National Poetry Month in Cranford, April 8;

Featured Poets: Deborah LaVeglia, John McDermott & Tom Plante

CRANFORD, NJ – The Hanson Park Conservancy will host A Night of Poetry in celebration of National Poetry Month on Thursday, April 8, from 7-9 p.m. at the historic Hanson House, located at 38 Springfield Avenue, Cranford. The featured readers will be three local, accomplished poets: Deborah LaVeglia, John McDermott, and Tom Plante.

Deborah LaVeglia and John McDermott are Cranford residents. Tom Plante lives in Fanwood. After the featured readers, the floor will be open to any aspiring poets who would like to read one poem. Deborah LaVeglia is director of the Poets Wednesday reading series at the Barron Arts Center in Woodbridge. She often works in schools as a visiting poet and she has performed at readings throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Her most treasured publication is an essay she wrote about Anne Sexton, which was published in College English Notes.

John McDermott has taught English in China and Japan. He is an associate professor of English as a Second Language at Union County College. He has been a featured reader at the Dodge Poetry Festival and has worked with teachers and students in workshops at high schools and teen arts festivals for many years. His most recent poetry collection is “The Long Way Home.”

Tom Plante was a writer for several newspapers, including the Berkeley Barb, the Irish Echo, and the Courier News. He has participated in poetry readings in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout the Garden State since moving to New Jersey in 1986. He edits Exit 13 Magazine, an annual journal of poetry that he has published in Fanwood since 1988.
